Like a great tube amplifier, a softer picking corresponds to a cleaner sound while a harder picking unleashes a big overdrive rich in harmonics. Turning the Focus knob counterclockwise requires playing harder to get distortion and the sound is mellower, great for jazz and blues. The Focus knob turned clockwise gives a slight boost to the highs and more immediate distortion, great for classic rock.
