Nowadays, in an age when digital technology allows electronic instruments to simulate any imaginable sound, musicians, producers, and performers persist in seeking the peculiar harmonic distortion and warmth generated by analog tubes. The quality of this distinctive sound is not limited to words and cannot be analyzed: it is the unmistakable tube sound.

The volca nubass is the first analog synth equipped with Nutube, the new generation of tubes. Tube and analog for a warm, rich, fat sound. The transistor ladder filter provides the character of a classic bass machine, with overdrive for the indispensable distortion needed to reproduce the typical aggressiveness and dominance worthy of a synth bass line. A new generation acid bass machine, combining classic sound with a modern synth design. This is the volca nubass.

The heart of the volca nubass is a tube oscillation circuit, utilizing innovative Nutube technology

The Nutube valve consists of two independent triodes. One is used in the oscillator to generate sawtooth and square waveforms. The other triode is used in the sub-oscillator circuit to add depth and warmth an octave below the oscillator. The oscillator and sub-oscillator are based on a structured circuit designed to reproduce the harmonic character that only a true tube instrument can express.

A transistor ladder low-pass filter to produce distinctive sounds

The low-pass filter of the volca nubass completes and defines the sound of this bass machine. Based on a transistor ladder design typical of classic analog bass synths, this filter is known for its dynamic intervention on the sound that goes far beyond the trivial “clear sound/dark sound.” Its extensive timbral possibilities make it ideal for various applications in dance music: from the most distinctive modulations typical of acid house to the more aggressive techno character that can be obtained by increasing the resonance.

Analog Drive circuit

The volca nubass features an analog overdrive circuit reminiscent of a classic stompbox. Turning the knob to the right applies compression to the signal, causing slight distortion, adding thickness to your bass sound. The tone knob also allows you to adjust the character of the mid-high frequency range.

16-step sequencer with parameter automation

The volca nubass is equipped with a 16-step sequencer complete with various functions that will allow you to play automated patterns; by using it together with a drum machine like the volca drum you can create your own tracks and grooves.

You can use the 16 buttons typical of the volca series to add and delete steps, or use them as a keyboard to record your performances in real time. The Chain function allows you to play different patterns in succession, up to a maximum of 16 for a sequence composed of a total of 256 steps.

The motion sequence function records potentiometer movements, to add variations over time to sound parameters. You can create loops, or use this function to generate surprising performances. 16 sequences and as many sounds can be saved and recalled directly in the internal memory of the volca nubass.

The active step function, which allows you to omit selected steps during sequence playback, halve or reduce its length, generate loop-based rhythmic effects, vary the rhythmic division, or create evolving patterns in real time, is indispensable.

Three functions for your grooves with the volca nubass

The volca nubass sequencer includes three functions to add the typical acid bass slap and slide techniques to your performances: transpose, accent, and slide, all controllable via the step sequencer.

Transpose is a function that plays the note one or two octaves above the original, to add movement to the bass line while staying on the same scale. Accent emphasizes a note to recreate a dynamic rhythmic pattern. Slide, on the other hand, is indispensable for more acidic bass lines because it introduces a smoother transition between notes played in succession. These functions allow you to increase the groove sensation in your sequences, to add an extra touch to your performances and musical productions.

You can apply random settings to all three mentioned functions. In addition to generating unpredictable patterns, you can constantly update the random setting to continuously vary your sequences, so that the volca nubass represents a constant source of ideas for your electronic music.

Excellent playability

Connectors for synchronization and external control

Using the volca nubass's sync In and Out connections, you can connect to Korg synths and groove machines (minilogue, monologue, prologue, electribe, SQ-1) and other Volca series instruments, to quickly synchronize the sequences played by the various instruments. There is also a MIDI IN port that allows you to control and use the volca nubass as a sound module with MIDI keyboards or DAW software.
