His ingenious optical compression design represented a technological breakthrough, far surpassing the stability and transparency of previous circuits. M.T. "Bill" Putnam, founder of Universal Audio, later acquired this patented technology and continued to produce the LA-2A for many years.Three Historic UnitsThe Teletronix LA-2A compressor collection includes three of the most desired incarnations of this iconic processor. As in the original hardware, the LA-2A Silver, LA-2A Gray, and LA-2 models offer distinct variations in terms of time constants, compression, headroom, distortion, frequency, and more.LA-2A Silver and GrayWith a brushed aluminum panel and the original T4B gain reduction module, the late-1960s "Silver" version of the LA-2A, produced by Bill Putnam, is perhaps the most versatile of the three plug-ins in the collection. Its fast time constant makes it suitable for a wide range of material, including instruments with prominent transients such as drums and percussion. Jim Lawrence's original mid-1960s "Gray" LA-2A has a slightly slower time constant, offering "medium-speed" compression.The Original LA-2The exceptionally rare LA-2 unit predated the LA-2A by several years. It offers the slowest response and a unique "sweetened" sound due to over 50 years of aging of the luminescent panel within the T4 module.
