The original Universal Audio 1176, designed by UA founder M.T. "Bill" Putnam, represented a significant breakthrough in dynamic processor technology. The first compressor with solid-state circuitry and ultra-fast 20-microsecond FET reduction, the Universal Audio 1176 is a versatile compressor that helped define the character and power of many historic recordings.Three 1176 Revisions for a Variety of SoundsThe 1176 Classic Limiter plug-in collection offers three distinct versions of the 1176, spanning over 40 years of the device's evolution. The Rev A "Bluestripe" version represents Putnam's original FET limiter design, with its characteristic distortions. The Rev E "Blackface" version represents Brad Plunkett's 1970s "LN" (Low Noise) era, with some variations, including a more linear compression response, gain via transistors, and a modification to program dependence. The 1176AE model is UA's exclusive 40th-anniversary edition of the 1176, which includes exclusive modifications such as a lower 2:1 compression ratio.Classic Compression IntuitivelyUsing the Universal Audio 1176 is simple and intuitive. The input simultaneously adjusts the compression threshold and the input signal level, while the output controls the final signal level. Attack determines how quickly the 1176 responds to the input signal, while release sets the time it takes to return to the initial level. The VU meter displays the amount of gain reduction (GR) or the output level (+4/+8), providing precise control over the compression process.Ratio Buttons for a Distinctive SoundThe four Ratio buttons allow you to control the degree of gain reduction: lower ratios for compression and higher ratios for limiting. By disengaging all Ratio buttons, you can disable compression, allowing the signal to pass through the 1176 circuit and adding an unmistakable touch to the sound. Thanks to user requests, the hardware's "Multi-Button" combinations are now also available in the plug-in, including the famous "All Button" mode.
