Description

Shure SM58 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

The Shure SM58 is the world's most famous dynamic vocal microphone. Unidirectional with a cardioid pattern, it boasts a robust construction with an anti-vibration system and a steel grille which, coupled with an optimized frequency response, ensure excellent speech and vocal reproduction. Designed to handle vocals with clarity and precision, the Shure SM58 cardioid dynamic microphone reproduces speech and vocals while minimizing surrounding noise. An ideal product for professional vocal applications on stage, in the rehearsal room, and in the home studio for recording musical tracks and podcasts. The robust structure of this microphone with a dark gray, enameled, die-cast metal handle ends with a spherical silver steel grille with a matte finish, making the SM58 one of the most durable microphones, resistant to impacts and the daily stresses of live performances. Inside the shock-mount grille that protects the capsule from any stress, there is an integrated foam pop filter specially designed to reduce noise, sibilance, plosives, and to attenuate wind-induced disturbances. The pneumatic mount prevents vibrations and mechanical noises generated by handling from interfering with the audio signal. Like all Shure products, the SM58 is constantly subjected to performance tests in accordance with the durability standards that this renowned American brand has accustomed us to: Shure quality, robustness, and reliability. The cardioid pattern offers high gain before feedback and isolates the main sound source, reducing sensitivity to off-axis sources. Outdoors or in a recording studio, for singers, speakers, and public speakers, the Shure SM58 microphone is appreciated and used daily by a vast audience of professionals worldwide. The frequency response from 50 to 15000Hz has been specifically shaped for vocals, with boosted mid-frequencies and attenuation in the low range that helps control the proximity effect. A presence peak in the highs increases speech intelligibility and allows vocals to stand out in the mix with amplified instruments. If you've ever heard someone sing or speak live into a microphone, they were most likely using an SM58. Rockstars, pop icons, comedians, presidents, and Popes, through the distinctive grille of this "ice cream" microphone, words and notes that have made history have passed for generations. On every stage, from clubs to stadiums, the Shure SM58 always ensures clear, pleasant, warm audio. Included with the Shure SM58 microphone, you will find an elegant black zippered case (Shure 95A2313) and a swivel stand adapter (180°) for mounting on a stand (Shure A25D). Curiosities and history of the Shure SM58 microphone The Shure SM58 is one of the most widely used professional vocal microphones in the world; perfect in form and performance. For many musicians and singers, it has been the only microphone for an entire career. Wherever music is made and where a vocal signal needs to be amplified, you will find a Shure SM58: a global industry standard. As with other microphones in the SM series, the internal design of the Shure SM58 can be traced back to the UNIDYNE 55 model from 1939. For example, the revolutionary Unified Acoustic Network developed by Ben Bauer in 1937, later adopted in the Unidyne 55, is common to most Shure cardioid microphones. In the 1950s, Ernie Seeler enhanced this technology by introducing a pneumatic shock mount integrated into the Unidyne III model (1959), the microphone from which the Shure SM58 inherited its namesake capsule. What sound pressure can an SM58 handle? At what point does the sound begin to distort? The answer to this question is simple: much more than your ears could tolerate. The SM58 can handle a sound pressure level between 150 and 180 dB SPL; for reference, that's about the noise generated by a shuttle during launch. Shure SM58: Virtually Indestructible Imagine, in the 1960s, Ernie Seeler tested the Unidyne III capsule by dropping it, cooking it, freezing it, and submerging it in various liquids. In addition to the daily stresses on stages across the planet, the Shure SM58 has been subjected to many tortures immortalized in various videos where the microphone is dropped from a helicopter, drowned in a pint of Guinness, hit by 12-gauge shotgun blasts, run over by a moving bus, thrown into the Pacific, microwaved, and grilled with hot dogs. In April 2011, in a New York Times interview, a wired SM58 microphone floated inside the International Space Station while being shared by six astronauts. Not only was the sound perfect, but it was a test that Shure engineers had not been able to perform on Earth: the performance of the Shure SM58 in zero gravity. The Shure SM58 has been the microphone of choice for Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney, Henry Rollins, Patti Smith, Alice Cooper, Buddy Guy, Cheap Trick, G. Love, Martina McBride, Megadeth, and countless other musicians and singers who have topped the charts and stood out for decades.
