Description

The Smooth Impact is a compressor pedal from Vox's "Valvenergy" series, featuring a Nutube vacuum tube. Characterized by a special LED display that shows the signal response on the effect, it has Tube Gain knobs to adjust the amount of signal sent to the Nutube, Comp to adjust the compression level, Output to adjust the signal output level, and 3 modes of use: VTG (Vintage), NAT (Natural), and SAG (Sagging). As with all Valvenergy pedals, the Smooth Impact recreates tube sounds, delivering the typical natural compression of a tube amp.

Watch Giovanni Buttitta's demo video of the Vox Valvenergy 2 pedals

Overview of the Vox Valvenergy Power Burst

SMOOTH IMPACT is a true tube compressor that utilizes gain variation derived from Nutube's power supply voltage fluctuations. It marks the debut of a tube compressor pedal, offering a distinct and natural sound feel, unlike other types of compressors. Instead of conventional VCA, optical, or FET methods, it leverages the non-linear response of tubes, with harmonics derived solely from them, distinguishing it from clipping.

By emphasizing the compression effect, it not only provides sharp tones but also allows for a compact sound with a light touch, even with settings that don't convey the nuances of compression. This makes it highly effective for players who don't like compressors and for supporting modern-style clean tones, tapping, and more. Furthermore, it is advisable to connect it to solid-state amplifiers or digital devices to incorporate the nuances of tubes. You can choose the character with the mini-switch.

VTG (Vintage) Mode: Emphasizing the attack, this mode produces a classic sound with extended sustain. It is effective for creating impactful sounds.

NAT (Natural) Mode: As the name suggests, it offers a natural feel, avoiding the sensation of "using a compressor pedal." It highlights nuances that may be imperceptible on the high strings, making it perfect for modern backing or tapping performances. Compared to Vintage mode, NAT mode operates quickly, applying compression from the attack with a shorter release. This makes it effective for achieving natural sustain control, aligning sound granularity, or increasing volume without unnatural sustain control.

SAG (Sagging) Mode: This mode replicates the sagging that occurs when vintage tube amplifiers are played at high volumes. It offers the natural compression and distortion achieved when playing a tube amplifier, making it ideal for combining with equipment such as transistor amplifiers or digital modelers to enhance the essence of a tube amplifier. Sag, felt when playing a guitar amplifier, is a phenomenon caused by a drop in power supply voltage, which includes not only compression but also power tube distortion. In this mode, Nutube distortion is actively used to reproduce sag through the combination of distortion and compression.

Compressors with numerous controls can be difficult to adjust. Therefore, by selecting one of the three modes based on the situation or preference, adjusting the Tube Gain and Comp knobs, and finally adjusting the volume with the Output knob, you can easily achieve the desired sound.

TUBE GAIN: Adjusts the amount of signal sent to the Nutube. As you turn it, Nutube distortion is gradually introduced.
COMP: Controls the compression level. Allows you to adjust the compression consistency through interaction with TUBE GAIN.
OUTPUT: Adjusts the output volume.
Mini switch: Offers three modes that you can choose from based on your preferences and the situation.

The Valvenergy series has been well-received as a series of pedals that offers the response of a tube amplifier, and now four new models are joining the range.
All models feature new-generation Nutube vacuum tubes and include a booster (Power Burst), a tube compressor (Smooth Impact), an overdrive (Fuel Injector), and a graphic equalizer (Tone Sculptor); a complete series of effects that are a must-have for guitarists. The pedals are designed to fully leverage the characteristics of guitars, effects pedals, and amplifiers combined before and after the pedal, and are simple, natural pedals that you never get bored of.

Watch the video of the Vox Valvenergy Smooth Impact!

Newly designed buffer circuit

To fully utilize Nutube's potential, a high-quality buffer was essential for the initial stage, serving as the primary guitar input point. As a result, Vox designed a dedicated buffer circuit to meet this requirement. When effects are off, the Nutube acts as a bypass, providing a natural response and a light feel similar to connecting directly to the amplifier. With effects on, the buffer characteristics synergize with Nutube's distinctive compression, resulting in a smooth and natural playing experience, with nuances that enhance the performance.

Engraved design inspired by sound

The top panel of the new chassis features an engraved design inspired by the unique sound of each effect pedal. The visual appeal of an effect pedal on a pedalboard is a crucial consideration when choosing your tools. The organic design of the Valvenergy series can enhance the overall aesthetics of your pedalboard with a fresh and distinctive touch.

Specifications of the Vox Valvenergy Smooth Impact

Input/Output terminals: INPUT terminal (mono jack), OUTPUT terminal (mono jack), DC.9V terminal.
Power supply: 9V alkaline batteries (6LF22/6LR62) or 9V DC AC adapter (both sold separately).
Dimensions (W x D x H): 72 mm x 120 mm x 55 mm (plug retracted/ VE-TS H:54 mm)
Weight: 300 g (excluding batteries)
Accessories (sold separately): AC adapter KA181 (9V)
