Description

Radial StageBug SB-2 is a high-performance mono passive direct box designed for musicians on the go. Built to fit inside a guitar case, the SB-2 is ultra-compact and packed with features that ensure excellent performance on any stage.

StageBug™ SB-2 Key Features

Passive DI for bass, guitar and keyboards

Ultra-compact, easily stows in your guitar case

Plug & play and easy-to-use features

Isolation transformer to eliminate noise

The device features a compact design, a ¼" input, and a thru-put for feeding an amplifier on stage. It connects to the custom Eclipse ET-DB3 transformer, which performs impedance matching and balances the signal. When used with instruments with powerful outputs, a -15dB PAD can be inserted into the signal path to use the SB-2 with active basses and digital pianos, which often tend to overload the interface input. An innovative stereo-to-mono merge function provides an easy solution for connecting stereo keyboards and computers without having to reconfigure the source for mono operation, saving time and input channels on the PA. The SB-2 output features an XLR connector wired according to AES standards.

Once connected, the SB-2 delivers a warm, smooth sound reminiscent of vintage devices. The Eclipse ET-DB3 transformer has the ability to handle extreme signal levels with natural and pleasant compression. The transformer helps eliminate hum and noise caused by ground loops by isolating the input from the output. If the problem persists, the Ground lift switch can be used to lift pin 1 on the XLR connector, for professional results. These features make the StageBug SB-2 the ideal choice for electric basses, acoustic guitars, and keyboards, in all those situations where great performance with a very small footprint is essential.

StageBug SB-2™ - Applications

Using the SB-2 with an acoustic guitar

Connect your acoustic guitar to your SB-2 to soften peaks and warm up the tone with a vintage feel. The input and thru jack sockets automatically merge the stereo signal to mono, saving channels, while the SB-2 balances the signal to handle distances of 100 meters without noise.

Using the StageBug SB-2™ Passive Direct Box

The Radial StageBug SB-2 is designed for plug & play use. Below we describe how to connect and get the most out of your SB-2. We recommend downloading the free manual by clicking the icon on the left.

Overview

The SB-2 is an ultra-compact passive direct box designed for keyboards, active basses, acoustic guitars, and other devices that produce high output levels. What makes the SB-2 particularly useful is the transformer-isolated circuit which requires no power, produces a warm, pleasing sound, and eliminates annoying noise and hum caused by ground loops. A ground loop can occur when connecting two AC-powered devices, such as a keyboard and a mixer, or when using a direct box with an electric bass or guitar amplifier. The SB-2 employs a high-quality isolation transformer that breaks the ground loop and eliminates noise.

Connections

Before making connections, always turn off or zero the PA audio levels to eliminate power-on transients that can damage more sensitive components such as tweeters. The StageBug SB-2 is 100% passive and requires no batteries or external power supplies. Connect your instrument to the SB-2 input using a standard ¼" instrument cable. Connect the XLR output from the SB-2 to the PA or recording system with a standard XLR cable. Turn on the PA and begin testing. Always test at low volume to have a safety margin in case of incorrect connections.

Adding a Stage Amplifier or Tuner

The SB-2 features a THRU-put connection for connecting the instrument to a stage amplifier or a personal monitoring system. This output is fed directly from the instrument and is not affected by the PAD switch. You can use the THRU output to connect a tuner.

Using the SB-2 in the Studio

The StageBug SB-2 also works optimally in the studio with basses, electric guitars, and keyboards. It converts the Hi-Z output of your instrument into a balanced Lo-Z output to feed your recording interface. The SB-2 applies the appropriate load on the pickup and produces a more natural and smooth tone than directly connecting the instrument/recorder, a very interesting feature if you plan to reamp later. To record, connect the SB-2 output to your favorite microphone preamplifier or simply to the microphone inputs of your mixer or digital workstation. The StageBug SB-2 sounds great, has excellent headroom, and allows you to get your work done better.

Using the Auto-Merge input

The SB-2 features an Auto-Merge function that combines the left and right outputs of a stereo device such as a keyboard or an MP3 player, resulting in a mono XLR output to feed the PA. This innovative feature saves channels on the mixer, eliminating the need to reprogram audio files or stereo setups before a show. Using the Auto-Merge function is simple: connect the left and right outputs from the stereo device to the ¼" INPUT and THRU jack sockets, and the SB-2 will do the rest for you!

Using the PAD to manage instruments with high signal levels

Instruments such as digital pianos or active basses generate extremely high output levels that can overload and distort more sensitive circuits. Although it is unlikely to overload the StageBug SB-2, it is equipped with a PAD switch that reduces the input sensitivity and the direct signal level to the audio circuit by 15dB. If distortion occurs, release the pad switch.

Using the Ground Lift

Sometimes excessive hum or noise can occur, this phenomenon is known as a ground loop and is often caused by the audio ground interacting with the electrical ground. The passive circuit of the SB2 has a transformer that often helps to solve the problem. There is also a Ground lift switch that disconnects pin 1 on the XLR connector to lift the audio ground. In case of noise, press the LIFT switch.

SB2 Technical Specifications

Audio circuit type Passive

Frequency response 20 Hz – 20 kHz

Total harmonic distortion 0.005% at 1 kHz

Dynamic range 115 dB

Input impedance 140 kOhm, unbalanced

Maximum input level +20 dBu

Output impedance 1K Ohm

Phase deviation 3° at 100 Hz; 8° at 50 Hz

Features

Transformer Eclipse ET-DB3

Pad -10 dB

Merge function Automatic, sums Left + Right to Mono

Ground Lift Disconnects Pin-1 on the XLR output

XLR output AES standard (Pin-2 hot)

Connectors ¼” IN and THRU, XLR-M in OUTPUT

General

Power Not required, it is a Passive DI

Construction Steel

Finish Baked enamel

Dimensions LxWxH 114 x 47 x 34 mm

Weight 0.25 Kg
