James Hetfield is one of the greatest riff masters, and as such, he needs picks that support his playing style. When he turned to Dunlop looking for a pick that would meet his needs, the team worked closely with him to create a solution that would keep up with and even enhance his performance. The 1.0 mm Flow Standard was used as a starting point. James tested it extensively and proposed a series of modifications and adjustments. First, the beveled edges of the Black Fang pick were incorporated to achieve a snappy, bright attack. Then, the 1.14 mm thickness was chosen to achieve the perfect balance between mass and shape. Finally, the grip was improved, creating a pick that stays firm in his hand when Hetfield plays heavy riffs. Once the right formula was found, it was also offered in other sizes.
