The Red Spot is an overdrive based on a single operational amplifier stage, very transparent and extremely respectful of the dynamics set by the musician. The controls are Volume, Gain and Tone, a switch for gain boost and one for clipping.With the Gain at minimum, Boost off, Volume at approximately 3 o'clock and Tone at approximately 3 o'clock, the pedal is practically invisible; increasing the volume then provides a clean boost of approximately 10 dB. Increasing the Gain increases the distortion to levels that border on distortion territory. All soft and fat.The tone is a simple variable low-pass filter, while the Boost switch increases the total gain, subtly but clearly audibly coloring the sound.The pedal is extremely dynamic and immediate, the pick attack is precise and defined, and the spectrum is complete, with no mid bump.The Clipping switch introduces symmetrical clipping into the circuit, acting in the operational amplifier's feedback loop, thus making the pedal softer and more manageable as the gain increases.
