Description

The Purple Spot is an overdrive based on a single amplification stage using a Class A biased Germanium transistor. The controls are Pre Gain and Post Gain (particularly interactive), plus a switch that selects between full range and low cut modes. The typical Germanium sound is evident, with very present and particularly juicy harmonics. You can go from a slight crunch to a soft distortion bordering on fuzz. The low cut mode is particularly interesting for solos or penetrating rhythms, and the present harmonics make the lack of bass less bothersome. The pedal uses a single selected PNP Germanium transistor; however, the power supply is the "Boss" type with negative ground, so it can be powered along with the vast majority of pedals on the market. However, do not try to use poor quality power supplies: despite the oversized filtering I have included, you might encounter noise problems. Inside the pedal there is a trimmer that can be adjusted to change the operating point of the transistor and thus the overall sound of the pedal. You can experiment at your leisure by adjusting the trimmer in both rotation directions: within the range where you hear the pedal producing sound, any setting is possible! The Purple Spot is particularly suitable for saturating the front end of small tube amplifiers.
