These are joined by the synthesis modules MOD-7: VPM / FM, PolysixEX and MS-20EX for analog modeling, and STR-1 for physical modeling. Used individually as Programs or combined in Combinations, the Sound Engines produce all the sounds of NAUTILUS-88 AT GR, from Vintage to the most modern or futuristic.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR SST Smooth Sound Transition

On NAUTILUS-88 AT GR, selecting various operating modes or musical resources does not cause any sound interruption. It is possible to recall Programs or Combis, or switch from Program mode to Combi, or even switch between Songs on the Sequencer, always maintaining the original decay and effects during changes, with a smooth, seamless transition. This feature is widely appreciated and praised by all musicians.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR the Sound Library

For timbre selection on NAUTILUS-88 AT GR, a completely new approach was applied, setting aside all preconceptions and conventions regarding Workstations, and thus devising a new type of classification capable of surpassing the boundaries of sampling and Sound Design. On NAUTILUS-88 AT GR, sounds are divided into three main groups:

Exclusive Sounds

In this category, NAUTILUS-88 AT GR offers exclusive and particular sounds such as: Loops with musical phrases, prepared pianos, original percussion, and much more. Characteristic musical phrases of rare, difficult-to-find and play instruments have been created and included in the internal sound library, freely usable in your musical pieces; and other unusual timbres like the "prepared" piano, whose timbre is modified by inserting screws, pieces of wood, and other objects between the strings, with very evocative results; or percussion sounds made using ordinary objects like kitchen tools or other items. These sounds can add original colors to your compositions or arrangements, and also represent a valuable resource for musicians who create sound design and music for images.

Modern Sounds

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR features the most up-to-date timbres suitable for the current music scene for genres such as: EDM, Electro, and Chiptune; with advanced Synth timbres, Drum Kits, and special effects that also facilitate the creation of effective Beats and Grooves for Dance music. The over 50 Drum Kits on this instrument offer a wide variety of percussive sounds capable of adequately representing the rhythmic evolution in musical styles of recent decades.

Standard Sounds

On NAUTILUS-88 AT GR, essential workstation sounds have been carefully crafted: acoustic pianos, electric pianos, guitars, basses, etc., to satisfy all musical genres. For the new acoustic piano sounds, the acoustics of the recording room were also sampled, with the possibility of personally mixing the direct sound with the ambiance; a new electric piano model with a characteristic full-bodied timbre, particularly suitable for Funk, has also been added.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR real-time dynamics control

Using the DYNAMICS knob, it's possible to control timbre and volume variations introduced by keyboard Velocity, and make them match the style of the played piece. Turning this knob allows for a completely different feeling, even when using the same sound. This is an additional method to adapt the instrument to your needs. By playing the keyboard and turning the "Dynamics" knob to the left, you get a softer sound with a wider dynamic range, which allows for delicate and expressive passages, ideal for accompanying singers or solo instruments. Turning the knob to the right, on the other hand, makes the dynamic response more energetic and uniform; particularly useful for making a timbre stand out more, such as in solos.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR physical controls

The six RT (Real Time) knobs on the panel allow for direct modification of PROGRAM and COMBI. Each knob can be assigned a variety of functions, such as timbre editing with: Filter Cut Off, effect level; control of the arpeggiator or Drum Track with Gate, tempo speed, Swing, Snare type, and much more. In COMBI mode, it's possible to group different timbres and control their volume with a single knob. To prevent accidental modification during a Performance, they can be fully recessed into the panel by simply pressing them, thus locking their position. This also allows you to select only the most frequently used ones, hiding the others.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR user interface

For NAUTILUS-88 AT GR KORG has designed a user interface capable of speeding up and facilitating every operation. Normally, adding functions tends to increase the number of physical controls on the panel; in this case, however, the path of maximizing operational speed and intuitiveness has been followed. The MODE button displays the selection of operating modes: PROGRAM, COMBI, SET LIST, SAMPLING, SEQUENCE, and GLOBAL on a single screen. In each MODE, access to functions is achieved through TABs, while the PAGE buttons allow for more in-depth modifications with intuitive procedures. This navigation system allows you to always return to the initial phase by simply pressing the MODE button. The display operates in Dark mode, which uses black as the main color to reduce eye strain. There are also 6 programmable shortcut buttons, which can be assigned to a range of functions such as: selecting Program or Combi modes, transport buttons for the Sequencer, etc. 4 different ready-to-use Templates are available, but it is possible to create and save your own settings.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR the Touch Display

The nerve center of the NAUTILUS-88 AT GR user interface is the large color (800 x 480 pixel) WVGA TouchView display; with which it is possible to select or directly modify a sound or parameter with a simple touch of a finger thanks to Touch Drag. A series of graphical and interactive tools are also available that facilitate programming, such as adjusting the grand piano lid opening on SGX-2, or connecting virtual patch cables on MS-20EX. The display features a search function: Search, useful for locating any musical resource based on a search key.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR the Set Lists

The SET LIST mode of NAUTILUS-88 AT GR allows for personal organization of sound resources. Each SET LIST is composed of a fundamental unit called a SLOT; there are 128 SLOTS in each SET LIST, and 128 SET LISTs are immediately available. Each SLOT can be given a name and assigned a musical resource based on needs: PROGRAM, COMBI, or SONG. From this, it is also possible to control parameters such as the volume of the selected resource, display text, or color it appropriately to highlight it within the list; each SLOT can also be moved and positioned where desired, or copied or deleted. This operational mode can meet any Live requirement, thanks to the possibility of programming the exact succession of musical resources needed. Finally, each SET LIST has a 9-band graphic equalizer, placed at the end of the audio chain and independent of the effects section, with which to modify or correct the overall tonal response of NAUTILUS depending on the environment in which the Performance takes place.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR Open Sampling System

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR utilizes the KORG Open Sampling System, for quickly sampling an external audio source, or resampling a Performance executed on NAUTILUS, regardless of the selected operating mode. The timbral possibilities offered by the instrument's vast internal Sample library are significantly expanded by the SAMPLE USER area, which, thanks to VMT (Virtual Memory Technology), allows the use of personal samples, maximizing the Workstation's SSD capacity. Samples in various formats can be loaded via the USB port: AIFF, WAV, SoundFont 2.0, and AKAI S1000/3000; if the amount of data is truly significant, it is also possible to use a high-speed Ethernet USB adapter. On NAUTILUS, it is therefore possible to use samples created on a computer for your compositions, arrangements, or productions.

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR the Sequencer

NAUTILUS-88 AT GR features a powerful Sequencer/Recorder with 16 MIDI tracks and 16 Audio tracks for creating songs or musical arrangements. This section has functions that facilitate and stimulate musical inspiration, with the ability to record polyphonic arpeggiators, Drum Tracks, or RPPR (Realtime Pattern Play/Recording), resulting in professional quality in a short time. The 16-track Audio Recorder captures up to 4 tracks simultaneously in: 16-bit/24-bit 48 kHz format.
During their Playback, it is possible to add effects, resample the obtained result, and import the Wav file into a Sequencer track. Editing functions such as Copy, Paste, Normalize, and mixing automation are also present.
Polyphonic Arpeggiator and Drum Track
These modules provide effective interactive musical support for every performance, with a wide library of rhythmic and melodic patterns; 4 different scenes are also available where different patterns can be set and recalled instantly; ideal for improvising, for Performances, or for quickly recording backing tracks or complete arrangements on the Sequencer.
