Starting with SGX-2, which generates a wide selection of acoustic pianos drawing from a vast PCM library without Loops, with all their nuances, even minimal ones, articulated across 12 Velocity levels, with string resonance, key release noise, etc. EP-1 realistically reproduces the timbres of the most famous electric piano models with tines and reeds. CX-3 emulates the unmistakable timbre of Tone Wheel organs, including the characteristic Rotary Speakers amplifier. In addition to these, there are the synthesis modules MOD-7: VPM / FM, PolysixEX and MS-20EX for analog modeling, and STR-1 for physical modeling. Used individually as Programs or combined in Combinations, these Sound Engines are capable of producing all types of sounds, from Vintage to the most modern or futuristic.

NAUTILUS-88 SST Smooth Sound Transition

On NAUTILUS-88, selecting various operational modes or musical resources within them does not cause any sound interruption. It is possible to recall Programs or Combis, or switch from Program mode to Combi, or even switch between Songs on the Sequencer, always maintaining sound tails and effects during changes with a smooth, uninterrupted transition. This feature is widely appreciated and praised by all musicians.

NAUTILUS-88 the Sound Library

For timbral selection on NAUTILUS, a completely new approach has been applied, setting aside any preconceptions and conventions regarding Workstations, and thus devising a new type of classification capable of surpassing the boundaries of sampling and Sound Design. On NAUTILUS-88, sounds are divided into three main groups:

Exclusive Sounds

In this category, NAUTILUS-88 offers exclusive and particular sounds such as: Loops with musical phrases, prepared pianos, original percussion, and much more. Characteristic musical phrases of rare, difficult-to-find, and difficult-to-play instruments have been created and included in the internal sound library, freely usable in your musical pieces; and other unusual timbres such as the "prepared" piano, i.e., with a modified timbre, obtained by inserting screws, small pieces of wood, and other objects between the strings with very suggestive results; or percussion sounds created using ordinary objects such as kitchen utensils or other items. These sounds can add original colors to your compositions or arrangements, and also represent a valuable resource for musicians creating soundtracks and music for images.

Modern Sounds

NAUTILUS-88 features the most up-to-date timbres suitable for the current music scene for genres such as: EDM, Electro, and Chiptune; with the most modern Synth timbres, Drum Kits, and special effects that also facilitate the creation of effective Dance Beats and Grooves. The instrument's over 50 Drum Kits offer a wide variety of percussive sounds capable of adequately representing the rhythmic evolution in musical styles of recent decades.

Standard Sounds

On NAUTILUS-88, essential workstation sounds have been carefully crafted: acoustic pianos, electric pianos, guitars, basses, etc., to satisfy all musical genres. In the new acoustic piano sounds, the acoustics of the recording room have also been sampled, with the possibility of personally mixing the direct sound with the ambiance; and a new electric piano model with a characteristic full-bodied timbre, particularly suitable for Funk, has also been added.

NAUTILUS-88 dynamics management

Using the DYNAMICS knob, it is possible to control the timbre and volume variations introduced by keyboard Velocity, and make them match the style required by the current song. By rotating this knob, a completely different feel can be achieved, even using the same sound. This is an additional method to adapt the instrument to your performance needs. By playing the keyboard and turning the "Dynamics" knob to the left, a softer sound is obtained, with a wider dynamic range, allowing for delicate and expressive passages, ideal for accompanying singers or solo instruments. By turning the knob to the right, the dynamic response becomes more energetic and uniform; this is particularly useful when playing in a band or orchestra to make a timbre stand out more, such as in a solo.

NAUTILUS-88 physical controls

The six RT (Real Time) knobs on the panel allow for direct modification of PROGRAM and COMBI settings. Each knob can be assigned a variety of functions, such as timbre editing with: Filter Cut Off, effect level; arpeggiator or Drum Track control with Gate, tempo speed, Swing, Snare type, and much more. In COMBI mode, different timbres can be grouped, and their volume controlled with a single knob. To prevent accidental modification during a Performance, they can be pressed in, retracting fully into the panel, thus locking their position. This also allows selecting only the most frequently used ones, hiding the others.

NAUTILUS-88 the user interface

For NAUTILUS-88, KORG has redesigned the user interface to speed up and simplify every operation. Normally, adding functions tends to increase the presence of physical controls on the panel, but in this case, the approach was to rationalize and optimize operational speed and intuitiveness as much as possible. The MODE button displays the selection of operational modes: PROGRAM, COMBI, SET LIST, SAMPLING, SEQUENCE, and GLOBAL, all on a single screen. In each MODE, access to functions is achieved through TABs, while the PAGE buttons allow for more in-depth modifications with intuitive procedures. This navigation system always allows returning to the initial phase by simply pressing the MODE button. The display operates in Dark mode, which uses black as the main color to reduce eye strain. There are also 6 programmable shortcut buttons that can be assigned to a range of functions such as: selecting Program or Combi modes, transport buttons for the Sequencer, etc. Four different ready-to-use Templates are available, but it is possible to create and save your own settings.

NAUTILUS-88 the Touch Display

The nerve center of the NAUTILUS-88 user interface is the large color (800 x 480 pixel) WVGA TouchView display; with which it is possible to select or modify a sound or parameter directly with a simple finger touch thanks to Touch Drag. A series of graphic and interactive tools are also available that facilitate programming, such as adjusting the grand piano lid opening on SGX-2, or connecting virtual patch cables on MS-20EX. The display features a search function: Search, useful for tracking down any musical resource based on a search key.

NAUTILUS-88 the Set Lists

The SET LIST mode of NAUTILUS-88 allows for personal organization of sound resources. Each SET LIST is composed of a fundamental unit called a SLOT; there are 128 SLOTS in each SET LIST, and 128 SET LISTs are immediately available. Each SLOT can be given a name and assigned a musical resource according to needs: PROGRAM, COMBI, or SONG. From this, it is also possible to control parameters such as the volume of the selected resource, display text, or color it appropriately to highlight it within the list; each SLOT can also be moved and positioned as desired, or copied or deleted. This operational mode can meet any Live requirement, thanks to the possibility of programming the exact succession of musical resources needed. Finally, each SET LIST has a 9-band graphic equalizer, located at the end of the audio chain and independent of the effects section, with which to modify or correct the global timbral response of NAUTILUS depending on the environment in which the Performance takes place.

NAUTILUS-88 Open Sampling System

NAUTILUS-88 uses the KORG Open Sampling System to quickly sample an external audio source, or resample a Performance executed on NAUTILUS, regardless of the selected operating mode. The timbral possibilities offered by the instrument's vast internal Sample library are significantly expanded by the USER SAMPLE area, which, thanks to VMT (Virtual Memory Technology), allows personal samples to be used, maximizing the capacity of the Workstation's SSD. Samples in various formats can be loaded via the USB port: AIFF, WAV, SoundFont 2.0, and AKAI S1000/3000; if the amount of data is truly significant, a high-speed USB Ethernet adapter can also be used. NAUTILUS therefore allows for the use of Samples created on a computer for your compositions, arrangements, or productions.

NAUTILUS-88 the Sequencer

NAUTILUS-88 possesses a powerful Sequencer/Recorder with 16 MIDI tracks and 16 Audio tracks; an important resource for musical creations or personal arrangements; this section features functions that facilitate and stimulate musical inspiration, with the possibility of recording polyphonic arpeggiators, Drum Tracks or RPPR (Realtime Pattern Play/Recording), with professional quality results in a short time. The 16-track Audio Recorder acquires up to 4 tracks simultaneously in 16-bit/24-bit 48 kHz format. During playback, effects can be added, the resulting sound can be resampled, and the Wav file can be imported into a Sequencer track. Editing functions such as: Copy, Paste, Normalize, and mixing automation are also present.

Polyphonic arpeggiator and Drum Track

These modules provide effective interactive musical support for every performance, with a wide library of rhythmic and melodic patterns; 4 different scenes are also available where different patterns can be set and recalled instantly; ideal for improvising, for performances, or for quickly creating complete songs or arrangements on the Sequencer.

NAUTILUS-88 the effects

The powerful NAUTILUS-88 DSP section can produce up to 16 simultaneous effects, selectable from 197 different types, divided into 3 categories: Insert, Master, and Total FX. Insert effects apply to single or multiple timbres of the Timbre/Track of a Combi or Sequencer. Master 1&2 effects can be adjusted for all tracks using the corresponding sends (Send 1&2), while Total effects act globally on the entire instrument.

Additionally, for each timbre, MIDI track and Audio of the Sequencer, a three-band equalizer is available to correct tonal balance or to creatively modify the sound.
Control surfaces can be connected to the USB/MIDI ports
NAUTILUS can be connected directly to any USB/MIDI Class-Compliant controller, such as KORG USB MIDI controllers with Pads like: nanoPAD, nanoPAD2, padKONTROL. With these, it is possible to play percussive parts, or trigger chords in Chord mode.
