In 1958, Gibson abandoned the "gold" finish on the Les Paul Model to introduce the "Les Paul Standard," a new design featuring a splendid maple top, a red-stained body, and a beautiful Cherry Sunburst finish. At that time, only the Cherry Sunburst finish was available, while for 2019, Gibson introduced several sunburst variations to enhance the plain maple top.
