The JACK connector

The Jack connector (Jack plug or simply Jack) is an electrical connector commonly used to carry very low voltage signals, mostly analog audio signals. It was invented in the 19th century for use in telephone switchboards and is one of the oldest electrical connector standards still in use.

Versions

The different versions of Jack connectors by contact availability are:

Jack TS: 2 contacts, used in audio for unbalanced signals

Jack TRS: 3 contacts, used in audio for stereo or balanced mono signals (also called Stereo Jack)

Jack TRRS: 4 contacts, used for stereo signals plus microphone or video channels, switch etc.

Jack TRRRS: 5 contacts, used in some portable devices with dual microphone or balanced stereo output etc.

Diameters

Sub Mini Jack: 2.5 mm, used for headphones, smartphones, consoles, camcorders etc.

Mini Jack: 3.5 mm (1/8" in Anglo-Saxon standard), used for headphones, smartphones, mp3 players, sound cards etc.

Jack: 6.3 mm (1/4" in Anglo-Saxon standard), used for musical instruments, headphones, amplifiers etc.

NATO Plug: 7.13 mm, mostly used in special fields such as military applications, aviation headsets etc.

Shapes

Straight: the connector output continues in the same direction as the cable

90° angled: also called "pipe" Jack or "L" Jack, used for space reasons, to avoid impacts, often in combination with the flat shape
