Cryogenically frozen with a liquid nitrogen blast, the strings offer enormous tone, resonance, and longevity. Dean Markley produces these strings with an original approach to compound winding. With the exception of strings smaller than .050, all other strings are made by building their mass with increasingly smaller gauge wires. Winding directions are reversed between layers to smooth out the covers and make the string smoother. The term "compound wound" does not necessarily mean two covers. On thicker gauges like .095, 3 covers are used, and on .120, four. This solution is applied, firstly, to use a reasonably small final cover and make the string smoother. Secondly, compounding allows for the use of a smaller, more flexible core wire, which improves the string's playability. Another important factor is the "core to cover ratio," which varies from time to time, achieving the right mix for the best playability and durability. For this, mathematical modeling is used to determine the correct mix of core to wind. The strings are made in two versions: Stainless Steel for a bright and incisive sound and Nickel Plated Steel for a rich and warm sound.
