Dave Smith Instruments presented the Pro 2, a monophonic synthesizer packed with features and aimed at achieving the highest possible specialization for a melodic synth of its type. The Pro 2 is a hybrid instrument, with four digital oscillators (plus sub-oscillators) and two analog filters of classic design. The filters, one low-pass and one state-variable, can be used in series or parallel, with the state-variable filter able to change from low-pass to notch, high-pass, and band-pass. The oscillators can be routed in pairs to both filters for a wide variety of tonal possibilities. According to Smith himself, these filters are one of the signatures that make the Pro 2's sound instantly recognizable. There is, of course, a multi-track step-sequencer that operates in 32 x 8 or 16 x 16 modes, also with real-time input. It can be synchronized to an external MIDI clock and can also be fed by an external audio input. Sequences can control not only the oscillator pitch but also any parameter of the synth's extensive modulation matrix. It supports both pauses and variable length sequences.
