An electric cable is a component consisting of a set of multiple wires acting as electrical conductors, twisted together and covered by one or more layers of material that acts as electrical insulation and protection (sheath). Widely used in the field of electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunications, its function is the transmission of electric current (for example in electrical systems or networks) or the exchange of data and information over a distance. The set of cable connections of a certain electrical network infrastructure or a cable system, as well as the operation of laying and interconnecting, is called "cabling". In almost all electric cables, metals with very low electrical resistivity (for example copper or aluminium) are used for the conductor wires. The latter have a variable cross-section depending on the current capacity and whether greater resistance to mechanical stress or greater flexibility is required; they can also be spirally twisted, flattened or shaped. Cables are manufactured products developed essentially in length, used to connect two points in order to transfer high intensity electrical currents from one to the other in the case of electrical energy transfer, or low intensity in the case of electrical signal transfer which, by their very nature, are suitable for transmitting information. In the first case, they are called power cables, in the second, telecommunications cables.
