Cre8Audio - West Pest - "West Coast Style" Desktop Synthesizer

The West Pest by cre8audio is a desktop analog synthesizer with a semi-modular design and West Coast influences.

The signal flow is typical for an electronic sound generator, close to the Buchla philosophy.

The stable oscillator offers sine, triangle, and rising sawtooth waveforms, perfect for working with the subsequent Wavefolder. The wavefolder creates new sounds from the incoming audio signal, ranging from subtle tone enhancement to total spectral devastation.

Often these sounds have a rather metallic character but should not be confused with ring modulation. The final shaping of the rich basic sound is entrusted to the VCA, whose control behavior is determined by the sustain and release parameters. An LFO is also present, whose frequency extends into the audio range. The years of experience of Pittsburgh Modular, who significantly contributed to this compact instrument, are evident.

Sequencer, Arpeggiator and Multi-functions

The buttons in the lower third of the user interface promise much more than the 13 notes with octave selection and the shift key might initially reveal.

Here you have access to the sequencer with its 13 patterns, the arpeggiator, clock dividers and multipliers, clock synchronization for the LFO, and the multifunction generator.

The latter can be used as a MIDI CC output (e.g., modulation wheel), as a second LFO with a triangle waveform, as random voltage, or a Decay envelope.

For many functions, there are variants or adjustable values in the shift menu. If you prefer to use all functions directly in a Eurorack system, simply remove the West Pest from its case and insert it into a Eurorack case, where it occupies 40HP.

The patch panel
One or two cables are often enough to completely transform the sound. If you connect the Fold output to the FM input, you get harsh, chaotic sounds. Things also get exciting when the VCA is modulated by the fast LFO in the audio section, which respectively creates amplitude modulation and sideband modulation. Since the MIDI CV/Gate interface also outputs control voltages, the Wavefolder can be played with Keytracking while the envelope is animated with the multimodulator. These examples only cover a small part of what West Pest can do on its own.
