Arturia BeatStep is a control surface with pads and rotary encoders that can also be used as a standard controller and a step sequencer. The new product from the French company offers complete connectivity, allowing you to connect analog synths for sequencing (via 1v per octave CV/GATE), as well as iPads and other software (via MIDI or USB). In fact, BeatStep can be used to create melodies in sequences, play drum machines, and any other compatible MIDI hardware. Perfect for triggering clips in Ableton Live, but also for playing rhythmic parts in EZDrummer or Superior Drummer, Beatstep is a powerful and versatile controller that, with USB, MIDI, and CV/GATE connections, can be used both with an iPad and with an analog synth as a step sequencer. In SEQ mode, the pads are activated for each step of your sequence. The 16 encoders will adjust the pitch for the associated step. The 16 memories allow instant recall of your favorite patterns, while the pad scale, seq playback, and time division modes allow real-time changes to the performance. Add to all this MIDI, USB, and CV/GATE connections, and you have a sequencer that can be used with any type of hardware, including analog synths, software instruments, and MIDI hardware. With 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads, BeatStep is the ideal control surface for percussion instruments. The ultra-sensitive pads allow for excellent dynamic performance. The 16 encoders can be assigned to adjust parameters that allow further real-time control over your drum sounds. BeatStep's pads can be configured to become MIDI CC buttons or to be assigned to send Program and Bank Change messages, as well as note-on and note-off messages. With the 16 encoders, 16 pads/buttons, and 16 presets, you have many applications for using BeatStep in the studio or live. You can trigger clips in Ableton Live or use the encoders to control effects in your DJ app. The transport buttons can become MMC or MIDI CC controls for start and stop commands on the DAW. BeatStep can manage the master MIDI Clock or can be slaved to an external clock.
