Unfortunately, due to trade embargos, high-quality Cuban-made bongos were unavailable in the US. So Cohen put his engineering skills to use and built his own set of bongos. In 1964, Martin Cohen founded Latin Percussion (LP), and soon distributed bongos, cowbells, and other instruments in brown paper bags to musicians. Cohen leveraged this close connection to artists from the Latin music scene which contributed greatly to the brand's success story and which is still part of the company's philosophy: The needs of performing musicians are put first.
